Scarred in Silence: Children’s Experience of War as Told Through Their Artwork

Trauma Rescue Aid released a report telling the world what children from Sudan have seen and experienced through their artwork. These children were not questioned, interviewed, or told what to draw – they were not asked to explain what their artwork represented. They were given paper and art materials, and the images that flowed through them onto that paper – the stories they voluntarily told the adults in the room – speak volumes. This report connects their testimonies to legal frameworks, revealing the harrowing truth of ongoing war crimes committed in Sudan and making urgent recommendations.

I hope you will listen to the voices of these children. Look at their artwork in the report above. Read their stories. Realize that their suffering is the result of global indifference.

Too many people ignore the cries of Sudanese people. Despite consistent calls for intervention – for an embargo to stop all weapon sales to the countries empowering this genocidal war, business goes on as normal.

Make that blood money! Sell those weapons! Cha-ching-cha-ching! My 401k is throoooough the rooooooooof! (Photo by Mizuno K on Pexels.com)

“The love of money is the root of all evil…” (1 Timothy 6:10)

Hundreds of thousands of civilian lives are in the firing line in Darfur, Kordofan, and Blue Nile regions of Sudan. Despite continual warnings that the RSF was committing genocidal violence, the world’s main weapon producing governments continued to sell weapons to the RSF’s main backer, the United Arab Emirates. Then, the RSF massacred an estimated 60,000 people in El Fasher in one month, the largest war crime this century (December 2025).

Secretary of State Marco Rubio and US leaders pretend to do diplomacy. They could stop US weapon sales to the UAE immediately, yet rather than do that, Rubio’s State Department has continued weapon sales to the UAE-even waiving Congressional oversight-despite clear evidence that the UAE arms the genocidal RSF’s violence in Sudan (April & Oct 2026).

With the war in Iran, and the UAE frequently coming under attack by Iranian missiles, one may presume that the UAE’s support of the RSF might slow. That has not been the case, with regular cargo flights continuing unabated from UAE military bases to RSF bases in Ethiopia and Chad (News From Sudan).

With the evidence that we have available to us, the US Congress is required by US and international law to block weapon sales to the UAE. Our members of Congress can do this – but they likely will not do so without our political pressure. Each American reading this message can contact their government representatives to demand that we STOP WEAPON SALES TO THE UAE.

(Not sure where to start? Here’s a phone banking guide!)

If you’re not an American, you can still ask your government to support arms embargoes and boycott business with the UAE.

(Canada, your weapons are consistently showing up on the ground in Sudan- directly inflicting war crimes. Get on the phone to your MPs and tell Mark Carney to stop selling and making weapons with the UAE!)

Each person reading this who may have investments in the “defense” industry can pull their money out of companies selling or producing weapons in the UAE. Call up your financial advisor and ask them the hard questions. Am I invested in any company doing business with the UAE?

If you drink cola, wear makeup, or take medicine, the money you’re spending on those items could also be tied into the war in Sudan. 80% of the world’s gum arabic (the key emulsifier in Coca-Cola, M&Ms, chewing gum, makeup, and pills) is sourced from Sudan. Since the war began, much of Sudan’s gum arabic is being smuggled into neighboring countries for sale by the same militias who commit the violence.

If you watch sports and streaming services, the money you spend on those pastimes are also likely contributing to the UAE. The NBA, Machester City, Arsenal FC, and many other sports leagues hold contracts with the UAE. The UAE sportswashes its image – so that you think of sports when you see “Emirates” instead of thinking of the blood of Sudanese children. Disney is building a theme park in Abu Dhabi, banking on the fact that you won’t tie the Emirati-backed-genocide of Black Sudanese bodies to the fairy tales Disney sells you.

You can boycott. You can complain. You can organize to raise awareness and assert the dignity of Sudanese people. You can hold onto your own dignity by removing complicity with the world’s largest humanitarian crisis.

A mother should not have to choose between being unable to feed her children in displacement and returning them to a conflict-affected area. Read Amzi’s story and stand in practical solidarity with Sudanese families needing a lifeline.

#WalkinSolidarity2026, June 29-30

Though I surpassed my goal of walking 5 kilometers per day in June, the 162 kilometers I walked was only 8% of the journey from Nyala, Sudan to Mukono, Uganda that 13 year old Khamis* and his family took to survive.

We did not reach the goal of raising $4,000 USD for July food distribution…
