#WalkinSolidarity2026, June 16-19

13.6 mi / 21.9 km
June Total: 64.4 mi / 103.7 km

Saturday, June 20th is World Refugee Day. There are events happening all around the world this weekend (search the internet for “world refugee day events near me”). I hope you can make it out to one near you or host your own!

In the little corner of Korea where I live, I led an event to pray for refugees this week, and on World Refugee Day, I’ll continue walking in solidarity and fundraising for TRAID, a Sudanese refugee-led organization in Uganda.

Now, let’s hear another story from a Sudanese child about the day their world changed and their refugee journey began. Our artwork and story today come from an 11 year old boy from the Kordofan region of Sudan (shared with permission):

“This is our village, Bara. My mom put us on a bus to go to El Obeid.

At the checkpoint, soldiers came. They told everyone to come out.

Men were put one side. Women and children another side.

They told us to lie down on the ground. I was so scared I wanted to disappear.

They started shooting the men and people were screaming.

Then said to us to go. The driver was dead.

My mom carried my little brother on her back. We left our bag of clothes. Many people were walking on the road. I was crying.

I wanted to go back home, but my mom kept pulling me.”

Each day in June, I’m walking in solidarity with Sudanese refugees. My goal is to walk 3.1 mi / 5 km per day to raise $4,000 USD this month. We still need to raise $2,739.

All donations will go to Trauma Rescue Aid‘s food distribution program for the more than 700 Sudanese refugee families they serve. Let me know your pledge in the comments below or make your donation today:

If you cannot give, could you walk to help us raise awareness? Americans can also ask their elected officials to take action for refugees. Thank you for your solidarity!

I succumbed to a cold and rested from walking over the weekend. However, my sickness reminded me of accounts of people who were sick when they had to flee their homes…

12 year old boy from El-Fashir: We were at home with my mom, father and my little brothers and sisters. Then we heard people screaming outside.

Mom started crying and shouting. I couldn’t hear her voice properly because everything was so loud. She grabbed us and said, “Come! Run!” #Sudan #Refugees #Children #Artwork
