Boycott Disney: Genocide is No Fairy Tale

I hear that many people started a boycott on Disney recently. Would any of you consider joining the boycott – or continuing it? I’ll summarize my reason & provide more details below.

Disney plans to build a theme park in the country fueling genocide in Sudan.

In January, the United States called the ongoing war in Sudan a genocide.¹ It is currently the world’s largest humanitarian crisis with more people displaced than anywhere else in the world and stage 5 famine. This is all man-made suffering.

Why is does this violence continue? The genocide in Sudan is backed by the United Arab Emirates, who send weapons to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in exchange for extracting the resources it wants.² Classic neocolonialism.

So, how is Disney connected? Disney announced plans this year to build a theme park in the United Arab Emirates – in Abu Dhabi – which would draw in a huge influx of tourists.³ At a time when the world needs to hold the United Arab Emirates accountable for fueling genocide and violating the arms embargo on Darfur, boycotting business with the UAE is the least we can do. Disney should not do business with the UAE.

As long as the UAE violently extracts Sudan’s resources and fuels genocide, Disney should not invest in the UAE. Fairy tales should never be built on the blood of others.

Boycott Disney. Tell them why. No financial partnership with the UAE!
