June 10-15: 15 mi / 24.1 km
June Total: 44.6 mi / 71.8 km
All of last week, my body was fighting a cold, and I succumbed to it over the weekend, taking two days to rest at home.
When I returned to my walking on Monday, my mind filled with accounts I have read of individuals who were sick on the day they had to flee their homes. One account of a child who was feverish, lethargic, and had to be piggy-backed – passed back and forth between siblings and parents – mostly unconscious – the timing of this sickness making a difficult journey even more desperate. In another such story, the child didn’t survive the journey, and the grieving mother had to bury the child along the way in an unmarked grave she’ll never be able to revisit. Another where an older man’s limited mobility slowed his group, so he voluntarily stopped and compelled everyone to go on without him. It’s heartbreaking to imagine his choice, and the guilt of those who left him behind. After being separated, did the older man survive? Will they ever meet again?

Each day in June, I’m walking in solidarity with Sudanese refugees. My goal is to walk 3.1 mi / 5 km per day to raise $4,000 USD.
All donations will go to Trauma Rescue Aid’s food distribution program for the more than 700 Sudanese refugee families they serve. Let me know your pledge in the comments below or make your donation today at gofundme.com/traid2024
If you cannot give, could you walk to help us raise awareness? Thank you for your solidarity!
