Enforce the Arms Embargo on Sudan

An open letter to my Senators requesting their support to enforce an arms embargo on Sudan:

I am writing today to ask you to support and co-sponsor S.Res.126 – A resolution calling on the United Nations Security Council to enforce the existing arms embargo on Darfur and extend it to cover all of Sudan.

This is personal to me, as I am married to a Sudanese man. Our family has been devastated by this war, one which the people of Sudan did not seek. In 2019, the people of Sudan overwhelmingly demanded an end to the military rule of Omar Al-Bashir and still desire a civilian leader who does not use military force to dominate the Sudanese people or extractively enrich the ruling class on their national wealth. In the wake of civilian resistance to military rule, two military leaders have tried to take supreme control using the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) on one side and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on the other. Their brutality, which began in April 2023, has resulted in widespread displacement, food insecurity, and human rights violations.

The Sudanese people, including our large extended family, now face a severe humanitarian crisis. There is growing evidence that the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and allied militias have committed atrocities, including those that amount to genocide, against the Masalit people and other non-Arab ethnic groups in Darfur. Three of my sisters-in-law are pregnant, but living in a part of the country under RSF control where it is very difficult to find food because of man-made famine.

S.Res.126 calls on the United Nations Security Council to enforce and expand the arms embargo to cover all of Sudan, closing dangerous gaps that allow the weapons flow to continue. The European Union and the United Kingdom have already taken steps to impose comprehensive embargoes—it’s time for the United States to push for stronger global action.

The U.S. must lead in stopping the flow of weapons that enable war crimes and genocide. Urge your representatives to support S.Res.126 today. Together, we can demand accountability and work toward lasting peace in Sudan.

Please write and tell me if you have co-sponsored this crucial bill.
