This webinar, directed toward an American, Christian audience, provides some context for South Korea’s martial law situation, which has been in the news lately, and offers some ways for Americans to stand in solidarity with South Koreans as the situation is still in play.
The webinar below includes an introduction by Peter Anderson, executive director of Peace Catalyst; a presentation by Jennie Telfer, Peace Catalyst staff in Korea; remarks from Fr. Peter Ju Seok Kang, director of the Catholic Institute for Northeast Asia Peace; and guest commentary from Jongho Kim, and Kaia Vereide.
To follow up to this webinar, the impeached President of South Korea has refused multiple summons to testify about the insurrection. The Constitutional Court must rule to certify or dismiss his impeachment by June. Because of the Korean people’s unified desire to defend their democracy from authoritarian rule, and the lingering uncertainty that the court will certify impeachment of a President strongly in line with US military interests, Korean people are still demonstrating and welcome your solidarity in the following ways:
- Respond to the current crisis in South Korea:
- Contact the Korean embassy or email the Ambassador to the US in solidarity with South Koreans resisting military rule and urging the President’s resignation.
- Ask your Congressional Representative and Senators to speak out publicly in support of South Korean citizens defending democracy and urging accountability for the unconstitutional martial law order.
- Join the call to end the Korean War:
- You can start by signing this letter to your representatives.
- Join the Korea peace grassroots movement in the USA.
- Keep learning:
- Find Korean American organizations in your area, follow their social media, attend their events, and make friends.
- Read more about the unended Korean War.
