Take Action! Week of Peace and Nonviolence

Donated by Japan in 1954, the peace bell is rung twice annually – on the first day of spring and the first day of autumn – September 21st – which is celebrated around the world as the UN designated International Day of Peace (photo credit United Nations).

Peace is an expansive concept, and when properly understood, encompasses right relationships, health and wellbeing of the environment, society, communities, families, and individuals.

One week after the Day of Peace, the UN has designated the International Day of Nonviolence (photo credit United Nations).

Nonviolence has been defined as love in action. It can be understood as proactive goodness working to creatively overcome violence without resorting to destructive tactics. Nonviolence understands the worth of each human being and does not see destruction of an enemy as success, rather endeavors by all means to preserve life and transform relationships. Nonviolence is a courageous way of living that will embrace suffering to achieve the end goal of healing and redemption.

In the week between the International Day of Peace and the International Day of Nonviolence, people organize actions for peace and nonviolence all around the world.

Will you take part this week? What action will you take?

๐ŸŽ For a simple action, I recommend signing the Korea Peace Appeal.
