For five years now, I’ve shamelessly exploited my birthday month as an opportunity to fundraise for people dear to my heart. The funds raised since 2009 have purchased plane tickets to send trafficked women home to their families, shipped nutritious food to famine-affected orphans, and supported alternative employment and job training programs for women wishing to leave prostitution.
To each of you who has given in the past – THANK YOU! And, to the rest of you –
my birthday has come around again, so, we can all take part in my 6th annual birthday fundraiser!
See the young man below? This is Malik, the adopted brother of my heart in Africa.
All the generations of Malik’s family have lived in the Nuba Mountains of Sudan, sustaining themselves in a tribal setting as farmers and cattle herders, but Malik made a risky move. The war in Nuba prevented him from furthering his education, so with his parents’ blessing and the encouragement of a friend that believed in him, he left his family home and traveled hundreds of miles to attend high school in a neighboring African country.
I met Malik in 2008, when we both lived at Yei Children’s Village. I did administrative work at the children’s home, while Malik continued his studies and looked after the young boys. I have watched him study hard and overcome many obstacles to finish his high school education. Now, he dreams of further study and becoming a doctor, so he can one day serve his community in the Nuba Mountains.
I am excited about Malik’s dream, but it won’t happen without the partnership of others. His high school education was sponsored by friends like me, but his university tuition is beyond our pay grade.
So, on my birthday this year, I am raising funds to support Malik’s ongoing education.
If you believe in Malik’s dream, please give as much as you can.
Or… just give $28 because it’s my 28th birthday. 😉
