The last four years, I’ve donated my birthday as a fundraiser for several different causes and organizations. The good news is that YOU, dear reader, get a chance to be part of my 5th annual birthday fundraiser. It’s going to be bigger and better than ever!

Birthday Fundraiser 2

This year, I have decided to exploit my birthday on behalf of
trafficked women that NightLight is helping to return to Africa.

Just to paint a picture for you, prior to being trafficked, most of these women were living in poverty in Africa, working hard and barely scraping by. If their kids were in school, no one was sick, and they had two meals a day, that was a blessing. They sometimes had much less.

Then, an acquaintance approached them about a job possibility in Asia. The job offers were usually positions in a restaurant, hotel, or hair salon. The salaries offered were more than the women were making at the time, so they thought they’d hit their big break. They could work their way out of poverty and travel internationally – something most women in their situations could only dream of!

The acquaintance arranged tickets and travel visas, explaining that the women would need to repay those costs with their first few months’ wages.

When the women arrived in Asia, they were told that the jobs they came for did not exist. They were given revealing clothes and told to go to the streets to find men. Their jobs turned out to be forced prostitution, and just like that, they had been trafficked.

Life had already beaten some of the women down by poverty and fatalism. With silent tears, they went to the streets.

Other women resisted their trafficker and refused to sell sex. With anger, pleading, and downright refusal, they tried to avoid prostitution, but the traffickers threatened beatings, gang rape, witchcraft, and in some cases, violence against family at home. Some women were beaten by their traffickers, violently raped by hired gangsters, and they were not free. The money they received from customers went into the pockets of the traffickers.

NightLight came onto the scene when these women asked outreach workers for help or when women were referred by investigators. Through various forms of intervention, including rescue, shelter, and other assistance, NightLight helps the women leave prostitution. But, until NightLight gets funds to buy a ticket and pay a woman’s visa fee, that woman remains in limbo. She wants to be home with her family. She wants to make a new start and end a painful chapter of her life, but she can’t go anywhere until she has a ticket.

NightLight has 13 women just waiting for funding to return home.

So, will you help me help them?

I want to exploit my birthday to the max so that these survivors of trafficking will be able to go home. That means, in the name of my birthday, I will whine and snivel and beg for money all month long. And, guess what? You can help!

The event is my birthday.

The goal is to get people to give money so NightLight can send trafficked women home!

Ready… set…

EXPLOIT MY BIRTHDAY!!!!
