Can anyone explain Bangkok’s moustache obsession to me?

Here are 4 photos I captured in the last 24 hours out and about the city.

Political poster. “I approve this mustache.” (and Isaan sausage! Yum!)

Political poster. “My moustache is better than the other guy’s.”

A hotel advertisement on Sukhumvit road.

Watches for sale near Pratunam.

I’ve also seen t-shirts with mustaches on them, and teenage girls wearing moustache rings. (Ingenious, actually. You can hold your finger above your upper lip for an instant moustache effect.)

So interesting… and confounding to my mind. Don’t get me wrong, I think facial hair is fabulous (though I prefer a beard – and I’ve never had much facial hair personally) – but I am confused by this apparent city-wide fascination. Maybe I’m not hipster enough to understand.

And, as if this post wasn’t confusing enough already, a very important question for my reading audience: Is it spelled mustache? Or moustache? Help a girl out, please.

A girl in youth has mustache glasses… the glasses have a chain that holds a mustache just below the nose. Also, books-a-million sells mustache tattoos that you put on your finger for an instant mustache… It seems to be sweeping the globe.

Wow… a global mustache movement! Sounds a bit like the planking craze that swept the globe a few years back. That was fun, however brief.

The mustache affection may pass eventually, too. Hair today, gone tomorrow… But… who knows? It might grow into global beard appreciation! 🙂
