I hear bush fires crackling outside, and my mind travels back to early 2009, when we fought fires all day defending the children’s center. 30 of our 40 acres burnt by the end of that day, but all of our buildings were spared, and our family slept safely that night. We praise Jesus for His hand in protecting us!

Bush fires are a natural and expected aspect of life in this part of Africa. I’m thankful that today’s bush fires won’t consume much. You see, it’s rainy season now, so the bush is green and full of life. The green bush won’t burn. I’m sure there’s an analogy in there.

The fires of testing are a natural part of our lives here on earth. Suffering and trials are inevitable – since we’re still living in a broken world – but the fire does not determine whether or not we will be destroyed. If you’re green and full of life, these fires won’t be able to consume you.

Are you green today? Are you abiding in the vine (John 15:1-6) – drinking of the Living Water (John 7:37-39) – being renewed day by day (2 Corinthians 4:16-18)?

Jesus will protect those who belong to Him, even if they’re not continually abiding in His presence (1 Corinthians 3:17). He’s merciful like that. But, surely you don’t want everything to be burned up and you alone to escape these trials as one escaping through the flames (1 Corinthians 3:15)?

Drink deep of Jesus today. Receive the Life within your spirit that will sustain you and give you what is needed to run the race ahead of you (Isaiah 40:31)!
