We have pit latrines here at the children’s village in Yei.
Somehow, I’ve always managed to find humor in the cockroaches, lizards, spiders, and smell. Well, I’m not the only one who finds the latrines humorous! Let me retell a conversation I had with some of the teenage girls and Abuba (an elderly caretaker on our compound) last night as they were making dinner.
Girl 1: “Where have you been?”
Girl 2: “I was at the UN office (the kids call our latrine the “UN office” because it is painted white and blue- UN colors).”
Abuba: (laughs hysterically)
Girl 1: “Who were you visiting at the UN?”
Girl 3: “She went to visit Mr. Cockroach.”
Girl 2: “No, I went to visit Mr. Fly.”
Abuba: (still laughing like she’s going to bust a gut)
Girl 1: “I think Mr. Fly and Cockroach must be suffering with all of the rain recently.”
Girl 3: “Yes. Not so many people go to visit them when it rains.”
Girl 2: “They may become hungry. That’s why I visited them.”
Abuba: “You can take them this soup! (Laughing her froggy laugh as she stirs the soup over the fire)”
Girls: (all laugh)
Girl 3: “Ok. I need to go visit them myself. I’m going to Mr. Cockroach.”
Girl 2: “Well, greet Mr. Fly for me!”
