I am writing this post to follow up on a previous post, which focused on the need for the Church to offer love and hope to the homosexual.
If we look at churches today, there are generally two postures taken in regards to this issue. Some churches preach a message of love and acceptance, but do not hold to the Biblical truth that homosexuality is sin and falls short of God’s plan. Other churches only focus on homosexuality as a sin, preach judgment, and do not express His love in their rhetoric or practice.
I believe both of those positions are terribly off-base and neither reflects the heart of God. He would have us bind both mercy and truth to us. Embracing one cannot mean rejecting the other- or we have failed. We must write the laws of truth and love upon our heart- for together they are written on His. (Proverbs 3:3-4)
God, in His heart of infinite mercy, offers love and hope to every person who comes to Him. However, God is perfect in all His ways, and to disobey Him is sin. The church must stand firm in the truth of Scripture, but, as we must do for all other sins, offer the hope of forgiveness and freedom!
For we have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. (Romans 3:23) We’ve all missed it, folks. None of us has lived up to the glory of God– His perfect will for us- because at some point, we chose to do life our own way. We sought our own glory – our own kingdom – and rejected His.
Do we even get that? When God created this world, He intended it to be beautiful! There was peace, harmony, and good relationships. There was no death, war, or pain, but every day, we perpetuate these cycles of evil by our own disobedience. Our choices ruined this world and our relationship with God.
Yet, even though we have injured God by turning against Him and by destroying this world with our sin and selfish desires, He desires to show us mercy! (Matthew 9:13)
Even when we were in the middle of our sinful lifestyles – breaking God’s heart – He sent Himself to pay His own life. He paid everything to show us mercy. That is no cheap mercy. Oh how He loves us! (Romans 5:8)
No sin is a joke. No matter how small, each sin is a slap in the merciful face of God. And yet, He is so good. He is faithful and perfect in His love, so if we acknowledge our sin, He will forgive us every time (1 John 1:9). What a good God He is!
So, we as the Church must cling to these truths in addressing every issue of sin. Sin is evil, wrong, and deserves punishment, but our God is exceedingly good and will lavish His love on us in forgiveness if we come to Him.
Don’t waver in these truths- on homosexuality or on any issue. Preach the TRUTH. The truth sets people free!!!
