The gay community has gone so far as to define their identity by their sexual attractions. This is due in part to the lie that they were created that way- that God meant for them to be gay… but, this issue of false identity is not merely a homosexual issue. I think this is something that all of us need to examine. God forbid that we try to remove a speck of dust in the eye of a homosexual while ignoring the plank of wood in our own eyes!
True identity is found in Christ alone… not in anything else. This is not some cute little church-ism. This is the truest reality I know.
That means that your identity is not found in your work, your achievements, your hobbies, your skills, your political associations, your church affiliation, your opinions, your children, your spouse, or even the service you do for God.
We exist for nothing else but fellowship with our God. We are beloved children of God. That is our true identity.
Who created you? Whose heart broke when you rejected His love? Who sent Himself to be brutally murdered on your behalf? Who still pursued you when you even rejected His ultimate sacrifice? Who has sustained and guarded you even before you turned to Him? Who holds back deserved judgment because His heart so longs to extend mercy?
He’s still loving you and making a way for you. He’s making a way for you to come to perfect fellowship with Him. That is why you exist. He is the metanarrative. You are the beloved of His affections.
When all of us realize this truth deep in our spirits- when we begin to live as though our relationship with Him truly is the bedrock and foundation of all existence- oh how free we become!
There is no heaviness, worry, fear, depression, or entanglement to sin that can stand in His presence. So, understanding and entering into our TRUE IDENTITY is the key to finding freedom! Our Father is and always has been the answer to our every need, but we’ve stopped believing that somewhere along the line. We’ve turned to therapy and support groups and medication and every kind of man-made solution, which are not bad in themselves- but are no more the solution to our needs than 4 is the solution to 1 plus 1.
I’m issuing a challenge for all of us to stop believing the lies and fake identities. Go to your heavenly Father. Ask Him to teach you who He means you to be and how to live in perfect fellowship with Him. He is big enough and loving enough to handle the rest. He is our hope.
