So, birds don’t belong in airports, do they? Because I’m sitting here in the airport, and there are four little birds hopping around inside of this terminal. Weird.

Well, I guess there is a lot for a bird to see inside an airport. Lots of nooks and crannies to explore. Oh, and the ceilings are really high, so the bird has plenty of room to fly. They have these artificial trees here and there… not quite like the real thing, but the birds can enjoy those, I suppose. Oh yeah, and they can sit on the ledges of the big observation windows and watch the big guys take off and land. Maybe they are learning from the “big guys.”

Something still saddens me to see these birds here.
I wonder if the Church can sometimes be like these birds. We enjoy the little communities in which we live. We read all the good little Christian novels, listen to the nice Christian music, and do all of the latest Bible study books. Seriously, we have quite an expansive subculture to explore. If the world makes anything interesting, we make a fabulous Christian imitation. And, within the church, there is plenty of room for us to practice, all the while admiring the “big guys” who do real ministry out there… in the real world.
So, um. The birds are still here. Still sitting on the ledge of that fantastic observation window. I wonder how many planes they have watched today? How many of those big metal birds have taken off and are right now soaring through the sky, while these birds sit here- inside? I wonder if those birds have any idea that they too were created to fly out there?
Now, maybe the birds are longing to get out. I hope they do. But, the point of this rambling post is to encourage all of us to get out of our airports.
Those “big guys” who do all the ministry- you know, the ones we all admire- whose books we read- who are “out there” – you know, “making a difference” – those “big guys” are living out their calling, right?
Well, little bird, what if you have a calling beyond these walls? What if you weren’t created to sit around watching…? What if the very same Spirit that lives in the “big guys” and raised Jesus from the dead(!!!) lives in you?
What if?
Where is the door, little bird? I hope you find it. I hope you give the Spirit freedom to use you.
He has much more for you beyond this airport.
